How it started: Bees

How it started: Bees

I didn’t grow up dreaming of becoming a beekeeper. It actually started with a class my grandfather and I took together years ago, “bee school,” of all things. We thought it would be interesting, and it was. Simple as that. Grandpa also had a farm – so that helped convince the family. I remember driving up to Bath NH to pick up bee equipment and stopping at a country store to get Cinnamon Raisin Bread.

From there, it stuck. We got a hive, then another. It became a quiet routine we shared…checking on the bees, harvesting honey, watching how a colony works together. No big epiphany, just something that felt worth continuing.

Now, I keep bees because they’re good for the garden, the environment, and honestly, they’re kind of fascinating. Watching them work is a reminder that nature usually knows what it’s doing. Plus, local honey? Always a win.

So that’s it. No grand story, just a slow, natural start that turned into a habit I’m glad I picked up.
